south_beach_shopping

Last weekend,  my friend and partner in bargain hunting, Judith, and I spent an evening in South Beach when both our hubbies were away.  We started at a nice little Italian place on Espanola way, using a $25 certificate we got for $3 from Restaurant.com.  If you haven’t heard of this, you should go look at it right away.  They have tons of great restaurants all across the country, it’s free to join and both saves you money AND introduces you to fab new restaurants where you live and when you travel.  And it’s great for gift giving — every holiday I give my husband a $100 gift certificate which costs me $12; he uses it to take me out for dinner at least four times during the year (so who is this gift for anyway?).

Judith and I shared a salad and a pasta — more than enough food for each of us, and all this for under $20 each (including the $3!).

Walking back along this tiny, European-style street, which has about a dozen doorways in total, we came upon (surprise!) a shoe store with a moving sale going on.  Quick stop and we walked away in our new shoes, total $30 for two pair, including tax (yes, the asking prices were low, but not that low — we asked for more, and got it!).

On to one of the hottest lounges on town, where Judith’s daughter’s boyfriend is the bartender.  Free admission for all, free drinks for us, and some awesome entertainment.  Of course, not everyone has a daughter with a boyfriend who tends bar in a great venue, but the lesson here is that if you’re lucky enough to know (and of course, like) anyone who can help you live like royalty on a pauper’s budget, take advantage of the friendship .  Who do you know?

Budget for the evening:

Dinner: $20

$129 shoes: $15

tips for free drinks: $10

parking $5

Night on the town for approximately $50 each including shoes, a value of easily 3 times as much: you know what’s coming…PRICELESS!

The Miami store is now closed, but I will be posting some great links to shoe sites soon.  Meanwhile, for another shoe story, click here.
